Exactly. That was sort of what I was getting at. One of the wonderful things about RP is that you CAN go ahead and do that, so long as you explain yourselves well =)
Example:
They could have been two guilds working toward a truce between the two, who had hoped to one day even unite the two factions. Unfortunately, war broke out between the two when one of the Empire guild members thoughtlessly killed a Gibberling (or at least that's the story the League side will tell). Of course, if you ask the Empire, they'll tell you they're sick and tired of the haughty elves looking and talking down to them all the time, insulting their intelligence. They may say that rumor has it that a small group of rogue elves even stole a sacred magical heirloom from one of the Xadaganians, but blamed it on a small Gibberling family and
that was why one was killed, resulting in an outbreak of war between the two faction guilds.
Is it a perfect story to follow? Not necessarily. However, it's a decent example of what I'm talking about. It doesn't have to be straight behind the main storyline, and it leaves room for RP work in many directions, because, of course, even if we have some form of storyline like that, there's many other options for RP, and as always, there's casual RP in game between characters as well.
