Nope, it's still extremely useful.
When you're mapping by hand you can mark in the paths you *didn't* take and subsequently see shortcuts and paths to hubs you havn't yet visitted and you have those maps until next reset.
The ship's scanner only records the hubs and pathways you actually flew down, not the ones you didn't, and the map resets between flights. Hence I still insist on navigating old-skool (Much to people's chagrin) - the scanner will get you to your destination and home again, a navigator will get you where you want to be and home again with the minimum eminations, time and possibly even danger
