Getting to 51 takes a week, at least, if you grind your butt off and don't have work. As far as taking 10 months... what you're speaking of is called progression. Every MMO has this. It's just that certain MMOs (like the current heavyweight champ) tend to easymode people through endgame, which dilutes the experience completely, in my opinion.
Ooh Ooh is it hello kitty online?

Hey! Hello Kitty Online is much more difficult then it sounds.
On a more serious note, completely agree with Kahruvel. I like that AO is more difficult.

Unless the person that was showing off the game mentioned that the account had over $15,000 invested into cash shop items, and that those relics would take about a 10+ months to get starting from being a fresh level 51 at the moment.
That value is an exaggeration. I don't think I've spent more than 130-140 dollars on Allods over the previous two years and I'm sure that'll carry me pretty far through Dead City on full 7/7/7o, 7/7/7d runes - which, by the way, I built up to level 5s using gold to pay for Crystal Chips.

Fascinating, eh?
Anyone experienced in MMOs comes into this one expecting to be playing it for a long, long while to be successful. I'm 100% certain that their articles will be written with this in mind, so there's no need to hammer that home.
Sorry but full 13s is most likely over 15k (especially with current gold value, need to use more CC and less Gold Dust) no matter what you say. Your full 7s isn't even 1% of the amount of CCs needed to make full 13s.

Judging by your reply, you didn't even read my post.

The problem Kahruvel is that you didn't respond to the relevant point.
People stated that full 13's cost $15k. This was because the char the news people got to use had 5*13 and 1*12. The community hopes that these people were properly told just how much the character was worth.
We obviously agree with you that full 13's are NOT required, but thats not what was shown to the journo's.

Fair point. I would, however, like to point out that in order to become a professional journalist, one must show that he or she has some mental faculties; which, of course, would predicate that they could've easily done due diligence and discovered this already. Considering that the game has caught flak in the past for unbalanced gameplay in the past, I'm sure they were all extremely aware. Proper journalism requires a trained eye and an investigative talent.
That being said, the GDC often has live showings of gameplay to vast audiences of developers. Deaths happening while showcasing content slow down the process substantially, or are otherwise awkward and embarrassing.
An example:
The character in question with this new appearance is a bard. No doubt they were being shown the bard's new features [Press Release: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/82443/]. I'd imagine running through heroics with a 51 bard with maxed runes would be a nice way of showing off all the new (read: OP), unique abilities.
In short, it wasn't a showcasing of the game in general, but of new features and skills. I'm sure runes had very little to do with it other than survivability and expedience.
